Head coach of the Black Stars, Milovan Rajevac has stated that, the late arrival of players has affected their plans.
Some European clubs delayed in releasing their African players due to tight league schedules. The Black Stars have players who ply their trade in England, a country whose clubs were involved in delay in releasing African stars for the 2021 AFCON tournament to start in Cameroon on Sunday, December 9. The Serbian trainer after the game expressed his disappointment over the delay in player release.
“Unfortunately this decision from FIFA to allow players to stay in their clubs in this period affected our plans for the preparation since most of the time we didn’t have many players to work with. “Many training sessions we had 7 or 8 players and 3 goalkeepers so it’s very difficult to do some tactical work to prepare the team the way we planned in the beginning.” Milovan Rajevac said.The Black Stars of Ghana were given a reality check in their pre-AFCON friendly on Wednesday. They suffered a 3-0 loss against defending African champions, Algeria at the Education City in Doha, Qatar.
Adam Ounas, Jonathan Mensah’s own goal and Islam Slimani’s easy tap in, were enough to give the Desert Foxes an edge over Milovan Rajevac’s side on Wednesday. The Black Stars take on Morocco in their 2021 AFCON opener on Monday, January 10 at 4:00pm Ghana time. Ghana last won the AFCON title in 1982 and the closest they have come to the trophy was in 2010 and 2015 when they lost 1-0 to Egypt and 9-8 on penalty shootouts to western neighbors, Ivory Coast in the finals respectively.
