The construction of Sh 82 billion Thwake multi-purpose dam is underway. The dam is being constructed at the convergence of Thwake and Athi rivers, the border of Kitui and Makueni counties. The dam will cover an approximate area of 2,900 hectares spanning Kikuyu escarpments, Mbooni, Makueni and Kitui areas.

Construction of Thwake multi-purpose dam is being financed by a loan from the African Development Bank and the Kenyan government through budgetary allocations to the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation.

The super contractor of Thwake multi-purpose dam, China Ghezouba Company has undertaken great works on the site, the erection of giant tunnels to divert water flow to create room for the excavation works at the beds of Athi and Thwake rivers.

The construction work of Thwake multi-purpose dam is expected to be completed in June 2022. Once completed, Thwake dam will help in liberating the economy of Kitui, Makueni and Kenya in general. The dam will boost agricultural production in Kitui, Makueni, Mbooni and Ngong’ areas. The dam will help people living in Kitui and the surrounding regions to get enough water to give their animals and to irrigate their crops. Thwake multi-purpose dam will also help in controlling the flash floods in Makueni and Kitui counties. Floods have been known to devastate the two counties for along period of time.
