27 sportsmen and sportswomen as well as sports administrators will be honoured
The Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) has scheduled the 45th edition of its annual awards ceremony for the Accra International Conference Centre on Saturday, May 23, 2020.
Addressing a press briefing on Wednesday in Accra, the President of the SWAG, Mr Kwabena Yeboah said 27 sportsmen and sportswomen as well as sports administrators will be honoured for their performances during the year 2019 at the MTN SWAG Awards.
He said the athletes would be rewarded for thriving in “sometimes horrible conditions” during the period under review.
“In consonance with what has become ritualistic for us, as an association, SWAG will on May 23, 2020 honour the nation’s most distinguished sportsmen and women who tilted the
scale in 2019,” he said.
“I feel elated to stress that this will be the 45th consecutive year SWAG shall be fulfilling this obligation to our tireless sportsmen and women. Need I emphasize yet again that this is Ghana’s longest-running awards ceremony honoured over 45 unbroken years.
Commenting on the performances of Ghanaian sportsmen and sportswomen at the sidelines of the press briefing, Mr Yeboah noted that although local football was absent for vast parts of the year, other disciplines such as athletics came to the fore with dominant displays at the African Games in Morocco.
“As you are aware, for over a year football was not played but the other disciplines did their best. We need to improve infrastructure in this country but within these constraints, the other disciplines did their best, remember athletics for instance with the 4×100 relay just thrilled everybody with their golden triumph.
“Other disciplines like badminton, beach volleyball, armwrestling did very well within those very tight conditions. I am very excited and I want to believe that if they are given maximum state support and support from the corporate world and with the right infrastructure, only the heavens will be the limit.
