Accra, Dec. 4, GNA –
University of Development Studies (UDS) has emerged as winners in this year’s
inter-tertiary schools debate on anti-corruption organised by the Ghana
Integrity Initiative (GII) to promote integrity and anti-corruption behaviour
among the youth.
The first position
was keenly contested by four GII Integrity club representatives from the
University of Professional Studies Accra (UPSA), University of Ghana-Legon,
University College of Education- Winneba and University of Development Studies
(UDS) in Accra on Friday.
The debaters in two
rounds shared their thoughts on the topics: “Ghana needs strong institutions
but not strong men” and “Democracy has supported corruption in Ghana”.
UDS and UG moved to
the final stage and UDS emerged winner with 108 and 105 points respectively.
UDS took the first place
with a cash price of GH¢1500.00 and a laptop; UG took a cash price of GH¢1000.00;
UPSA, which came third, received GH¢800.00; and UEW went away with GH¢500.00.
Madam Mary
Awelana Addah, Programmes Manager, GII,
said the initiative was necessary because the youth are a force to aid in the
fight against corruption and to shape communities in the country.
She said youth are
in their formative years which makes it easier to instil in them values of
integrity and the importance to build a better nation devoid of corruption.
“Those within this
programme are our future leaders and by the time they take up offices of
leadership they would be properly informed to make good decisions and stand for
what is right and fight corruption,” she said.
Abu Sulemana
Mohammed, student of UDS and part of the winning team, expressed his gratitude
to the organisers and shared how much effort they put in to win the event.
He said they would
serve as good ambassadors to share the information acquired through the
programme to help in the fight against corruption.
Isaac Asare, a
student UG, said he has learnt a lot within the two days and would put such
good values learnt to practice.
He said applauded
their opponents and the organisers for the keen competition.
