Takoradi, Dec. 7, GNA – Mr Joseph Bossman, a
46 year-old man with 23 years farming experience is the overall best farmer in
the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis (STMA).
Mr Bossman
has 15 acres of cocoa, seven
acres of cassava, three acres of maize, two acres of sugarcane, one acre of
plantain, one acre coconut, half acre each of vegetables, and cocoyam farms,12
goats and 30 local birds.
For his prize, he received a deep-freezer,
sewing machine, knapsack sprayer, 8 pairs of Wellington boots, 10 cutlasses, 6
plastic chairs, a full piece of wax print, a bicycle, radio set, bag of lime
and a certificate.
Mrs Rebecca Sam, 64 year-old woman was the
best female farmer with 30 years, experience in farming.
She has 5 acres of maize, 3 acres of
cassava, 2 acres of plantain, one acre each of okro, sweet potato, and
vegetables with 5 goats.
Mrs Sam received a 32-inch flat screen TV, a
sewing machine, 4 pairs of Wellington boots, 4 plastic chairs, 6 cutlasses, a
knapsack sprayer, piece of wax print, a radio set, bag of lime and a
certificate
Mr.Egya Ankyere 55 years old man won the
best fishermen in the Metropolis.
He has 6 canoes, 45 crews, 300 poultry and
35 goats.
He was awarded with a medium size deep
-freezer, a sewing machine, knapsack
sprayer, 4 pairs of Wellington boots, wax print, 6 cutlasses, 4 plastic chairs,
a radio set, 2 bundle of twine, 150 pieces of floats, 150 lead, a bag of lime
and a certificate.
Mr Joseph Yalley, 45-year old man was best
physically challenged farmer.
He has 2 acres of cassava farm, 2 acres of
cocoa, half acre each of cocoyam, okro, pepper, maize, garden eggs, and
plantain.
Mr Yalley received a sewing machine, wax
print, a knapsack sprayer, 2 plastic chairs, 4 pairs of Wellington boots, 5
cutlasses, a radio set, a bag of lime and a certificate.
Mr Anthony Sam, Metropolitan chief executive
commended all farmers particularly the awards winners.
He said the government was committed to
improving on agriculture and would roll out a number of interventions to
support small scale farmers.
He mentioned the Planting for food and jobs
as the major intervention put in place to support farmers and therefore
encouraged the youth to take advantage of the initiative and go into farming.
He announced that STMA was selected as one
of the pilot assemblies for the special poultry programmes of which 85 farmers
in the Metropolis were selected for consideration.
Mr Daniel Essel, Metropolitan Director of
Agric hinted that funds secured for the training of the youth in the green
house project would focus on local and exotic vegetable cultivation and would
serve as an opportunity and motivation for the youth interested in vegetable
production.
