Ghana’s International Boxing Federation (IBF) lightweight titlist, Richard Commey, is set to pocket $370,000 from his first title defence against Raymundo Beltran at the Pechanga Resort Casino in Temecula, California.

Commey, who was billed to earn $350,000 from the bout, will have an additional $20,000 for Beltran’s failure to make the required 135 pounds weight for the championship.

According to the rules of the California State Athletic Commission, Beltran will be fined $40,000 from his expected $200,000 purse to be shared between Commey and the sanctioning body.

The Ghanaian made the required weight after weighing 134.4 pounds while his opponent Beltran coming in at 136.8? pounds during last Thursday’s weigh-in.

Per IBF rules, Commey will retain his title regardless of the result of the fight as long as he is not heavier than 145 pounds at the Friday morning weight check mandated by the sanctioning body.

However, Steve Feder, Beltran’s manager, said his boxer had struggled coming down from 140 pounds to 135 for the fight with Commey having fought at junior welterweight in his last ring outing against Hiroki Okada.

“We did everything we normally have done in the past. Up to two weeks ago he was right where we would expect, but over the past seven days we noticed that his body wasn’t reacting to the weight cutting as it has in the past,” Feder said.

“We adjusted things on Saturday but each day we weren’t getting the movement we wanted. He had a great camp and worked incredibly hard all nine weeks and especially this last week focusing on the weight,” he added.
