Parliament’s Subsidiary Legislation Committee is set to meet with the Attorney-General and the General Legal Council (GLC) in a bid to find a solution to the problems surrounding legal education in Ghana.
The meeting slated for next Tuesday, follows a petition submitted to the Committee by students of the Ghana School of Law, Thursday.
The students are demanding a total overhaul of how legal education is conducted after it emerged more than 80 percent of students who sat for last year’s Bar exams failed.
The students are also asking Parliament to set aside the Legislative Instrument (L.I) seeking to regulate admissions into the Law School.
A member of the Legislation Committee, Mahama Shaibu told Joy News Friday the petitions should push for a dialogue.
Mr Shaibu believes “the AG is a listening person” and it is time she sat at the negotiation table.
“…the entire nation thinks we should have a national dialogue on this…so let us not wish away what the people of Ghana are saying.
The Member of Parliament for Asawase and Minority Chief Whip, Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, believes the L.I. will not pass.
He said he and a fellow legislator, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, are mobilising support to trash the L.I.
“…Afenyo Markin and I are working on something that will bring up interest…so that at the time the report is laid before the House, we will have the two-thirds majority to throw it out,” Mr Mubarak said.
He added that: “…it looks like we will get the majority of those who do not belong to my party [National Democratic Congress]”.
