The Member of Parliament for the Kumbungu Constituency in the Northern Region, Ras Mubarak has disclosed that, the people who raised funds for former President Mahama did so because of the confidence they have in him.

Some 96 members of parliament were able to mobilize about GHC 600,000 within 24 hours in John Mahama’s bid to become the NDC flagbearer.

The decision to mobilize funds to support the former president, according to the 96 National Democratic Congress legislators was their own small way of showing support.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem morning show, Tuesday, Mr Mubarak said his donation was a way of fulfilling the wish of the party’s constituents.

“We are in parliament not for ourselves but for our constituents and we have no option than to listen to them. Ghanaians are suffering and businesses are collapsing with people crying for Mahama’s come back so we had to do something,” he noted.

Mr Mubarak also explained that their decision to support the former president does not mean they were against the other aspirants.

“We have tested and seen the difference between the Mahama and Akufo-Addo administrations and as the Akan proverb goes, it is when you climb a good tree that we push you,” he explained.

“John Mahama is climbing a good tree so we want to help him; we want to help bring back Mahama who everyone is asking for his return,” he added.

The NDC is demanding filing and nomination fees of GHC420,000 from all who are contesting for the party’s flagbearership.

This high fee has attracted criticisms from most Ghanaians and some aspirants who have called for a reduction of the figure.
