Accra, Aug. 29, GNA
– President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on Wednesday met with the clergy at the
Jubilee House in Accra to discuss issues of national interest and to deepen the
harmonious relations between the Government and religious bodies.

The closed-door
breakfast meeting was attended by leaders of the Orthodox, Charismatic,
Pentecostal Churches and representatives of the National Chief Imam.

Issues discussed
were believed to have centred on the economy, education, taxation of the
commercial aspects of church activities and the controversy over the building
of the National Cathedral.

According to a very
reliable source the meeting agreed that commercial activities engaged in by
religious bodies should be taxed.

Additionally, it was
necessary to establish a regulatory body to streamline the activities of
religious bodies.

President
Akufo-Addo, the source said, apprised the religious leaders of the Government’s
Free Senior High School Policy and the double-track system to bed introduced in
the coming September.

He underlined the
need for all sections of the Ghanaian society to support the government’s
vision of creating a prosperous and modern country, with equal opportunities
for all people.

“The President
was very clear and unambiguous in the discussions at the meeting and we were
also very clear on what we also thought, and hopefully, we will begin to see
some positive outcomes as a result of our meeting with him this morning,” the
source added.
