Accra, Aug 17, GNA – Mr. Joseph Ashon-Cudjiw,
a veteran journalist, has appealed to government to consider providing the
police with bullet proof jackets to embolden them to face criminals in gun
battles and also save their lives.
He said the police also needs to have armoured
vehicles as well as binoculars to detect crime from a distance beyond the power
of the eye.
Mr. Ashon-Cudjiw the former President of the
Travel Writers Association of Ghana (TWAG), who was commenting on the recent
attacks on policemen in Accra, on Thursday, said one of the compelling reason
for his appeal was the fearless attitude of criminals in confronting policemen
on patrol in gun battles.
He suggested that, as an incentive, police
officers who get injured in such gun battle should be promoted alongside a
compensation as well as posthumous awards, in case of death.
He said policemen at sensitive places should
be provided with powerful pistols instead of AK47 rifles because it exposes
them and provides the criminals the chance to change their strategy of
operation.
Mr Ashon- Cudjiw said such measures will make
it easier for the police to take on criminals and also ensure the safety of the
citizens.
