AMA registers households refuse collectors (Borla Taxis)

By Samuel Dodoo, GNA

Accra, July 23, GNA
– The Accra Metropolitan Assembly(AMA), has registered about 460 households
refuse collectors, popularly known as “ Borla Taxis”, using the tricycles as
part of measures to monitor their operations in Accra.

Mr Abraham Afful, a
Registration Officer of the AMA, who made this known to the Ghana News Agency,
said the exercise, which was being undertaken by the AMA was in the interest of
the collectors themselves and the public.

He said the ongoing
exercise would ensure that residents in the Metropolis identified the tricycles
by their stickers before giving the refuse to them to dump at the appropriate
places.

He also warned the
public not to give their refuse to the ‘’Junkies” or the tricycles without the
stickers displayed on their machines.

He said the measures
had become necessary because most of the collectors operating had no permits
and licenses to ride the tricycles, hence the need to register them and also
find ways of improving sanitation of the environment by giving them stickers to
enhance the health of the city populations.

Mr Afful urged the
residents in the Metropolis to change their attitudes to ensure good health and
to save the AMA from spending so much money to control waste.

Mr Kwame Frimpong,
President of the Borla Taxis and Tricycles Association (BTTA), welcomed the
issuance of refuse collectors’ stickers to flush out the fake ones among them.

He said since their
Association was charge to protect the interest of refuse collectors, he would
ensure that their illegal activities and that of the junkies were discouraged.

Miss Lydia Bamfo,
Vice-President of the Association, also called on the AMA to undertake a public
health education for their members to enable them be abreast with trends in the
health sector and be active to their responsibilities.

‘’There was the need
for a comprehensive policy on Borla Taxis, location of every member in Accra
and the formation of a task force by the Association, so that they would not
abuse the system,’’ She said.

She said it was
obligatory for everyone using tricycles in Accra to register and be tag with an
AMA sticker to ensure their compliance, to remedy the current unhealthy
practices associated with indiscriminately dumping of refuse everywhere in
Accra.
