General News of Saturday, 16 December 2017
The People’s National Convention (PNC) has condemned the arrest of its Charmian, saying the move is an affront to democracy.
Bernard Mornah, and Security Analyst Irbard Ibrahim were arrested Saturday for embarking on what police sources describe as illegal march.
The two activists and 15 others were arrested at the famous Kwakudi Park, where they had gathered to address a crowd.
The two gentlemen are leading members of the Ghana-Togo Solidarity Movement, a group fighting for the restoration of proper democracy in the former French colony.
“Our rally is to draw attention to the decaying situation in Togo. As you are aware, the masses of Togo have for time now been protesting peacefully for the full bouquet of Democratic rights and the abolition of dynastic rule,” a statement released by the group said.
However, in a statement, the PNC said “such arrest could be a tantamount to an affront on our democracy to curtail citizens of their freedom and right of expression.”
Below is the full statement:
BERNARD MORNAH ARREST UNFORTUNATE. PNC TREASURER.
It has come to our notice that our National Chairman Bernard Mornah has been arrested and detained at the Nima police Station on the 16th December, 2017 for an act described as an illegality by the police for his participation in a public match/procession.
This news comes to the PNC as a shock since such arrest could be a tantamount to an affront on our democracy to curtail citizens of their freedom and right of expression.
We are doing everything humanely possible to rescue our National Chairman out of the situation.
We also wish to add strongly that, the PNC is not aware and did not sanction our National Chairman involvement in the that public march or procession.
