Member of Parliament (MP) for Fanteakwa South Constituency in the Eastern Region, Kofi Okyere Agyekum has said that a new set of Electoral Commission (EC) officials must be appointed to occupy the positions of the three Electoral Commission [EC] officials under investigation.
Three EC top officers, comprising the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Mrs. Charlotte Osei, together with her two deputies – Georgina Opoku-Amankwa, in-charge of Corporate Services and Alhaji Amadu Sulley, in-charge of Operations have alleged among themselves an abuse of power and corruption scandal thereby jeopardizing the operations of the commission.
This has pushed the judicial Council, through the Chief Justice (CJ), Sophia A.B. Akuffo, to form a five-member committee expected to investigate the matter under Article 146 of the 1992 Constitution.
Speaking on UTV’s ‘Adekye Nsroma’ programme, Mr. Okyere Agyekum insisted “this state will not be safe should we keep the three EC officials in office because that particular office in which they occupy on behalf of the state is very sensitive and cannot contain their caliber of lack of credibility, per contentions hovering around them”.
He sought to know why members of the NDC keep charging President Akufo-Addo and members of the NPP for intentionally finding every means within their capacity to remove the EC boss from her post.
“We keep preaching about peace and unity everywhere in this country but how can we practice those key words when members of our electoral commission do not have peace and unity among themselves?” he asked Lawyer Tweneboa Koduah host of the programme.
According to him “the best decision to bring peace out of this probe is to bring new officials to occupy the positions of the three involved in the scandal since they can never work together again as one unit even after they are retained after the proceedings.”
