The Member of Parliament (MP) for the Gomoa East Constituency, Mr Kojo Asemanyi, has stated that the government’s decision to create a new district out of the existing Gomoa East District is a major step towards the transformation of communities in the area.

According to him, considering the size of the district which is undoubtedly the largest in the Central Region, it is not out of place that the government, acting through the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development (MLGRD), has split the district into two. This is among the 38 new districts created whose Legislative Instrument (LI) was laid before Parliament recently.

While commending the government for the move, he noted that if the LI was passed and the new district inaugurated, it would greatly inure to the benefit of the people in the Gomoa area since it would facilitate the rapid development of both districts.

The LI, which was recently laid before Parliament by the MLGRD Minister, Hajia Alima Mahama, saw the creation of the Gomoa Central District out of the already- existing Gomoa East District, with its capital at Gomoa Afransi.

Per the decision, after the LI has been passed, the old Gomoa East District, will now be Gomoa Central District with its capital still at Afransi, while the far end, starting from Gomoa Assin Mampong to Gomoa Dampase will be Gomoa East, whose capital is yet to be decided.

Town hall meeting

During a Town Hall meeting organised by the Information Ministry and the Local Government Ministry at Gomoa Ekroful, Mr Asemanyi said the area had been short-changed for far too long due to its large size, which had prevented efforts towards development across the communities.

He explained that both districts would now have a central administration that would focus primarily on addressing the development challenges confronting communities under their jurisdiction in the areas of sanitation, health, education, extension of electricity, roads, among others.

‘’I am optimistic that the split of the district into two will open up both districts to a lot of development, especially in the area of job opportunities for the youth,’’ he stressed.

Land guard raid

Mr Asemanyi commended the Ghana Police Service for the recent arrest and prosecution of land guards who were terrorising estate developers and land owners in the constituency, saying the move by the police will bring sanity into the area.

He added that as a country, we could not allow miscreants to take the law into their own hands and cause mayhem in the district, when ‘‘their activities are scaring private investors away.’’

The MP for Gomoa Central, Mrs Naana Eyiah Quansah, called on the people to offer support to the government to enable it to deliver on its mandate to the masses.
