Mining firm Goldfields is to lay off about 1,500 workers in line with the change in the module of its business.

The workers are agitating over the move and are threatening a showdown with management in the coming days.

The workers are likely to receive their termination letters December 13, 2017 while others will be retained on contract basis.

Meanwhile, the Head of Communication at Goldfields David Johnson has justified the move, adding 80% of the affected workers will be absolved.

“We have come to a point in our operations where we need to make strategic decision which is the preferred business module to work with,” he told Starr Business. “We have changed our business module from owner mining to contract mining.”

Mr. Johnson revealed the affected workers will be compensated.

“Over 80% of the workforce will be absolved by the contractor… as per the collective bargaining agreement there is a package that has already been decided and signed off. And it has already been arranged,” Johnson stressed.
