George VandalGeorge Mensah allegedly stabbed the deceased

A 23-year-old footballer is in the custody of the Legon Police for allegedly stabbing a former student of the university to death following an argument.

The deceased has been identified as Martin Tweneboah, alias Tipsy, 32.

The suspect, George Osei Mensah, who claims to be an associate Vandal, is said to have stabbed Tweneboah, who is also a Vandal, with a broken bottle at the Commonwealth Hall.

Students of the University of Ghana who are attached to the Commonwealth Hall are known as Vandals.

Associates vandals are students of the university who frequent the Commonwealth Hall and participate in the hall’s activities.

Mensah is said to have never attended the University of Ghana but claimed he liked the Vandals.

As a good drummer, the suspect is said to play the drums anytime the Vandals engage in any activity.

Confirmation

The Public Relations Officer of the Accra Regional Police Command, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Mrs Efia Tenge, who confirmed the incident, said the police received a distress call about 7:30 p.m. from the Legon Hospital authorities indicating that a young man had been stabbed to death and his body deposited at the facility.

She said information gathered showed that Mensah and Tweneboah attended the funeral of a Vandal at Dodowa in the Shai Osudoku District in the Greater Accra Region last Saturday, December 9, 2017.

While the two were in the Commonwealth Hall van on their way back to Accra, they engaged in a heated argument.

Though the issue in contention was not known to the police at the time of going to press, it is said that Mensah and Tweneboah still exchanged words when they arrived at the Commonwealth Hall about 6:30 p.m.

Some people who saw the two argue, according to the police, tried to broker peace but the two would not stop.

In the heat of the argument, Mensah allegedly grabbed an empty bottle, broke it and stabbed Tweneboah multiple times in the neck near the Father Bacchus statue at the Commonwealth Hall.

Some eyewitnesses and Good Samaritans who rushed to the scene took Tweneboah to the Legon Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Mrs Tenge said when the incident was reported to the police, some policemen were dispatched to the crime scene to cordon off the area while investigations continued.
