A Deputy Minister for Youth and Sports has called on the youth to focus on unearthing their potentials to the fullest in Ghana instead of seeking greener pastures in foreign lands.

Speaking at the maiden edition of the Ghana Youth Summit, Pius Enam Hadzide said Ghanaians, especially the youth must change the mentality that life is better in other countries.

He said, “The typical Ghanaian youth look forward to opportunities in developed countries. We were made to believe that grass is greener elsewhere. This thinking is what has led to the barbaric 21st-century slavery that we hear about in Libya”.

According to Pius Hadzide, even as the whole world condemns the slave trade in Libya, the Ghanaian youth need to change their mentality.

“It is important that we reassure the youth of Ghana that grass is green everywhere. Instead of locking our doors and leaving the shores of Ghana, let us learn to unlock our creative potentials,” he added.

On her part, Second Lady Samira Bawumia urged the youth to seek guidance and be ready to learn from others if they want to succeed in life.

She said, “All of us need someone who inspires us to do better that we already know how, we need guidance and support from those who’ve gone ahead of us, we need lessons they have learn along the way and most importantly we need to apply those lessons to our lives. Greatness is derived from lessons”.

Mrs Bawumia further encouraged the youth to follow their passion as that is the easiest way for them to excel.

“More often than not, we turn to think that certain professions are more superior than others … but today we see amazing things happening around us. We see people who are creating new industries around their passions.”

The Ghana Youth Summit is an outreach programme designed to bring together the youth and young leaders of Ghana. It is designed to engage, network, connect and provide a platform for youths to share ideas and utilize their diverse skill-sets and knowledge to effectively create new and sustainable opportunities to help address the rise in youth unemployment.
