One more student was reported to have died on Tuesday
One more student of Kumasi Academy (KUMACA) in Kumasi in the Ashanti Region was yesterday reported dead from meningitis.
Following the recent deaths, parents whose children are in the school besieged the school’s compound early yesterday morning to demand the release of their wards from the school.
While some of the parents threatened to sue the school authorities for the negligence of duty, others also threatened to curse anybody who was sacrificing the innocent children for spiritual gains.
It took the school authorities several hours to calm down the angry parents as they refused any excuse given them not to take their wards from the school, a situation which nearly created chaos on the school compound.
Meanwhile, there was a crunch meeting between the school authorities and the Ashanti Regional Minister, Hon Simon Osei Mensah, following yesterday’s sad incident. The meeting, Today gathered, was aimed at finding out the cause of the deaths and future solution to the problem.
Today further learnt that officials from the Ministry of Health (MoH) Disease Control and Monitoring Team from Accra had begun investigations into the “mysterious deaths.”
Deep throat sources at the school told Today that MoH officials had been involved in series of meetings with the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Hon. Alidu Seidu, and District Director of Education for Asokore Mampong to find out what could be the possible causes of the deaths.
Between Thursday and Friday last week, three first-year students had died strangely from diseases that are yet to be identified.
Even though some people are attributing the deaths to meningitis, medical authorities are yet to come out with the autopsy.
Two of the victims, both males, died on Thursday evening after having been rushed to hospital at high temperature.
The third victim died on Friday at a separate hospital when he left the campus to seek medical attention at home.
He was also reported to have died as a result of high temperature.
It will be recalled that similar deaths occurred early this year at the school which caused lots of fear and panic amongst not only the students but parents and guardians as well.
The Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council, in collaboration with the regional branch of the Ghana Health Service (GHS), had announced that the deaths were due to an outbreak of meningitis in the school.
