The Sports College, formerly Winneba Sports College has been in a sorrowful state due to its neglect by the government over the years.

The neglect by government highlights the poor maintenance culture in the country.

The National Sports College (NSC, Winneba) was established by the erstwhile PNDC Government in 1984 under S.M.C. Decree No.54, 1976.

At the time of its establishment, Ghana’s performance in sports at the international level was experiencing a downward slide as a result of the exodus of the sectors technical and human resource for greener pastures.

The College accordingly was charged with the responsibility of training and re-training the country’s technical and human resource in the Sports sector to fill the vacancies created by the exodus of our trained and skilled officials to sustain the development and promotion of Sports in Ghana.

The Government of Ghana has promised to transform the National Sports College following the institution’s current poor state.

“ Many people think the Sports College is no longer in existence but is very active,” Mrs. Adams Florence, Public Relations Officer for the college told Atinka TV.

“As you already know, we develop talent, soccer academy and from time to time we run courses for soccer coaches and coaches in other disciplines,” she added

As the only institution which is aimed at nurturing and training sportsmen and women for the nation, the college is yet to receive any financial support from the state.

Finance Minister Hon Ken Ofori-Attah during the 2018 Budget statement revealed that government will ensure the Sports institution be “transformed into a center of Excellence”.

Atinka TV Sports Court team visited the institution to observe at firsthand the current state of the college.

•Dining Hall: It is in good state compared with other facilities.

•Guest House: This house has 25 rooms that accommodate sports coaches and officials who come to offer their short-term courses. However, its current state is not encouraging.

•Tennis Court: That tennis court purposely established for sportsmen and women to polish their talent as professional tennis players. It contains 8 court but being left in a deplorable state. The developers left a huge land back the court set use for swimming pool for the student, but now turns refuse dump. Floodlights not working.

•Football Pitch: A very nice pitch was constructed for the college but lack maintenance culture, tartan track very bad for athletes to train on.

•Hostel Facility: The hostel was supposed to accommodate only sportsmen and women in the college but now they being “perched” by some students of University of Education – Winneba and reason for that arrangement is unknown.

“The maintenance of this place has been the problem because funds from the government were not coming so keeping our things and reformation became difficult for us that’s why some of the facilities were in the state you found them,” Mrs. Adams Florence revealed

The Institution currently has 68 students- both newcomers and continuing students.

According to Atinka TV investigations, the Late Mr. Erasmus Adorkor during his time as director for the college, allegedly misappropriated some monies accrued from the onward transfer of former Asante Kotoko duo Samuel Nkoom and Michael Anabah and also former Satellite star Abeiku Quansah who were all products of the college.

“Yea hmm seriously it is difficult for me to speak about it because you know we don’t speak ill of the dead by Akan customs. However, since it is the public domain what can I say? it’s true that Samuel Nkoom, Michael Anabah, and Abeiku Quansah’s onward transfer fees were never accounted for.” Collins Aduafo (Windy Professionals Team Manager) told Atinka TV

“We started this fight against him (late Erasmus Adorkor) but nothing positive came out from it and its unfortunate, maybe God knows the reason why he took him early from us,” he added.

The current Director for National Sports College, Mr. Eric Dwamenah who just assumed office about 5months ago told Atinka TV that he has all the collective data of the problems facing the institution and has promised to seek for funds to start the renovation process to revive the college.

The National Sports College which has unearthed National Stars previously is now in debt.
