Court Gavel1A magistrate court has fined three people GHC360.00 each

The Abeka Sanitation and Motor Magistrate Court has fined three people GH?360.00 each or in default spend ten weeks imprisonment for dumping refuse at unauthorized places at the Tema Station and its environs in Accra.

The offenders are Adjoa Adam, 35, Elizabeth Nsobila, 18, and Kwesi Aryeh 38.

The court presided by Mrs. Victoria Ghansah, admitted two other accused persons, Tackie Tewiah, 41, and Lydia Mensah, 30, to a bail of GH?1000.00 each for pleading not guilty and would reappear on December 7, 2017.

Mr. Matts Yingura, the Osu Klottey Sub-metro Coordinating Director, said on November 22, the accused persons were caught in the act of dumping refuse around the Tema Station enclave by the Osu Klottey Sub-metro Sanitation Taskforce during a special operation in the night.

He said the area has been facing a huge challenge from unscrupulous persons who always empty their garbage on the streets, especially at the Tema Station.

Mr Yingura said although the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has accredited waste service providers in all the sub-metropolitan districts to ensure garbage disposal some people were still dumping refuse indiscriminately, hence the formation of the task force to ensure environmental sanitation in the areas.

He said the AMA has issued warnings to the public to uphold good sanitation practices or face prosecution and that in the past months it has rolled out strategies and initiatives to fulfill the President’s move to make Accra the cleanest city in Africa.
