Ama K. Abebrese
Ama K. Abebrese born 3 May 1980 is an award-winning British Ghanaian actress, Television presenter and producer.
She was born in Ghana and raised in West London in the United Kingdom.
Speaking exclusively on GN Radio in UK last week, the renowned actress and TV host explained her ‘BIG’ move from UK to Ghana and how that has contributed immensely to the success in her career.
“People keep asking me; ‘Ama why did you have to leave UK when you are making it big here?’ But I laugh and I tell them Ghana is my home and that’s where my root is. When I came to Ghana I realized there are a lot of immigrants over here; some coming all the way from Poland and living their normal lives and going about their normal duties so that inspired me to also stay which I did. Fortunately for me, I have my folks here so it was easier when it came to where to stay or lodge,” she said.
Touching on how she penetrated into the Ghanaian market in terms of acting, the ‘Beast of No Nation’ actress added, “well that just didn’t happen; it took me about 6 to 8months before I finally got to be featured in Shirley Frimpong Manso’s ‘‘Sinking Sands’’ and then other roles started coming and it was amazing. From movies, I even got an appointment as a Production Head at then Viasat1 now Kwese TV. I also hosted the morning show ‘NEW DAY’ on TV3 with Nana Aba Anamoah and Benny Blanco.”
“So coming to Ghana was amazing though I didn’t come with many expectations. I was treated well because this is my home and since then I don’t regret coming.’’ She added.
Ama.K Abebrese’s film credits include the international multiple award-winning film Sinking Sands, directed by 2011 BAFTA LA and Pan African Film Festival prize winner Leila Djansi.
The film received 12 nominations at the 2010 Ghana Movie Awards, including “Best Actress in a Leading Role”, the film won four awards, including “Best Film”, and also the Netflix movie Beasts of No Nation directed by Cary Fukunaga and stars Idris Elba. She plays the mother to lead young actor Abraham Attah who plays Agu. Abebrese is listed among Africa’s Top 20 Actors and Actresses by FilmContacts.com.
She was named among C Hub magazine’s 100 most influential ‘African Women Influencers’ of the era 2014/15.She was ranked the Number 1 Most Influential TV and Radio Host 2015 on the Ghana Social Media Rankings List.
The screen diva is an accomplished television presenter, having started hosting TV shows in her teens on YCTV in London, she has presented on BBC2, OBE TV, Viasat 1, TV3, Ebonylife TV and many more.
