Deputy Sports Minister Pius Enam Hadzide wants the government to find other creative ways of rewarding the national U-17 players rather than giving them physical cash.

The ministry has received backlash from a section of the public over their decision to reward each Black Starlets player with $8,000 for their efforts at the U-17 Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon and the FIFA U-17 world cup in India.

Instead, many have suggested providing education and football scholarships as a form of reward for the boys, a suggestion Hadzide believes is worthy of consideration.

“Personally, I think there’s a lot of sense in the proposal to find creative ways to reward those ‘minors’ rather than cash.

“Motivation should not only be material. You should be intrinsically motivated to compete for Ghana. It should be a privilege to don the national colors at that age,” he revealed on Citi Fm’s Sports Panorama.

“But we met a situation and the attitude was not to rock the boat at the time. But going forward, we all need to discuss these matters and come to a conclusion on what the way forward should be,” he concluded.

England, winners of the U-17 and U-20 world cup tournaments did not pay bonuses to their players.
