The support would enable the AMA and the MTTD to complement the efforts of the National Road Safety
The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) and the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police have received tools and accessories from the Bloomberg Philanthropies Initiative for Global Road Safety.
The Police received 200 LED-light batons and 200 reflective vests, 100 traffic cones, 70 directional sign posts, 50 raincoats and two boxes of latex gloves while the AMA had 100 pieces of reflective vests, 100 LED-light batons and 50 raincoats.
The support would enable the AMA and the MTTD to complement the efforts of the National Road Safety Commission (NRSC) in the implementation of road safety in Accra.
The items, presented during a three-day workshop on “Drink-Driving Enforcement” in Accra, were received by Mr Mohammed Adjei Sowah, the Accra Metropolitan Chief Executive and the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Mr Anane Danquah.
Mr Adjei Sowah, opening the workshop, urged the participants to take advantage of the workshop on international best practices to develop effective strategies that would help eradicate drink-driving.
He said: “Our goal is to make Accra the preferred city to live in and work in good health and safety and as such, the city authorities will work in partnership with the law enforcement agencies to meet that agenda.”
He called for collective commitment of the citizenry to help reduce road crash fatalities and injuries to ensure world class road safety in the metropolis.
Mr Adjei Sowah said the road crashes statistics of 13,616 accidents between 2011 and 2015 in the Accra Metropolitan area alone was worrying and urged everyone to assist in reducing it.
“Road safety is the responsibility of all – motorists, pedestrians, traffic regulators and enforcement personnel, among others, and we must ensure that the right behaviour and discipline prevails on our roads to bring a positive change in Accra.”
DCOP Danquah gave the assurance that the Police would collaborate with stakeholders to ensure safety on the roads and promised that the items would be used judiciously to achieve its intended purposes.
