For those desperate to control their hunger, researchers at Technische Universität München (TUM) have good news: They’ve discovered a food that can curb appetite.

When these scientists tested oils on volunteers to see how it affected their eating, they found that olive oil was the biggest help in putting down the fork. Each of the subjects in the study ate yogurt supplemented with various kinds of fat.

“Olive oil had the biggest satiety effect,” reports researcher Peter Schieberle. “The olive oil group showed a higher concentration of the satiety hormone serotonin in their blood. Subjectively speaking, these participants also reported that they found the olive oil yogurt very filling.”

The researchers also found that merely smelling the aroma of olive oil helped people feel full.

The results of the aroma study were definitive: The olive oil group’s calorie intake stayed steady, but the control group ended up consuming an extra 176 kilocalories daily.

Schieberle explains: “The aroma group adapted (lower calorie) eating habits — but the control group participants were obviously not able to do likewise. We also found that in comparison to the other (olive oil aroma) group, the control group had less of the satiety hormone serotonin in their blood. Our findings show that aroma is capable of regulating satiety.”
