Former Member of Parliament (MP) for Akwatia Constituency in the Eastern Region, Mohammed Baba Jamal has said he will not be snubbed when the best ten MPs in the country are being mentioned.

According to the former National Democratic Congress (NDC) MP, though he lost his seat in the 2016 general elections, he considers himself amongst the best MPs in the country because of the role he played as an MP for his constituency and the country as a whole.

“Yes I lost my seat to a hairdresser, God knows best and He [God] alone can explain to us further but I am confident that if the best ten MPs are announced in this country, trust me, I will be in the first best MP even in the whole wide world” he said.

“I brought massive development to my area during my tenure as the MP for the area and so you should understand me when I say I am the best MP in Ghana” he stressed on Accra Based Okay fm on Monday.

Baba Jamal who was also the former Deputy Minister for Employment and Labour Relations lost his Parliamentary seat to Madam Mercy Adu-Gyamfi, also known as Ama Sey in the Akwatia Constituency.

Madam Sey, a beautician, polled 21,433 votes to beat Baba Jamal’s 15,905 votes, according to results from the Akwatia Constituency.

During campaigning, Baba Jamal had derided Madam Sey as a mere ‘hair dresser’ who posed no threat to him.

It took Jamal over a decade before winning the Akwatia seat in 2012 having contested for four times in a row.

The Akwatia constituency has long been a very stronghold of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) but Baba Jamal wrestled the seat from then then incumbent MP, Dr. Kofi Adu Asare.

Reacting to his lost as well as his party’s defeat in the 206 elections, Mr Jamal revealed that policies such as scrapping of teacher and nursing trainee’s allowances in an election year contributed to the NDC’s defeat.

He also stressed that, the defeat of the NDC was largely caused by the increase in the Electoral College during the party’s primaries as it brought disunity into the party.

This notwithstanding, Baba urged party members to focus on identifying the real reasons for their humiliating defeat and resolve them as soon as practicable.
