The Akufo-Addo led government has been dared to repatriate two ex-Guantanamo Bay detainees back to the United States.
The call comes after the Supreme Court described as unconstitutional decision by then President John Mahama to accept terror suspects into the country.
The Supreme Court ruled that government acted unconstitutionally when it decided to accept two ex-Guantanamo Bay detainees into the country.
The arrival of Mahmud Muhammad Bin Atef and Khalid Muhammad Al-Dhuby into the country in 2016 sparked huge public uproar over the possible security implications as the two were believed to be former Al-Qaeda terrorist.
Based on this backdrop, 86-year-old retired conference officer at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Margaret Bamfo and Student at the Ghana School of law Henry Nana Boakye, a member of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in January 2016, headed to the apex court to challenge the move by government.
The court presided over by Justice Sophia Akuffo in its ruling on Thursday June 22, 2017 said the agreement was unconstitutional.
But on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Thursday, Managing Editor of the Al Hajj newspaper, Alhaji Iddrisu Bature said he was excited about the ruling.
He indicated that the NPP which opposed their coming does not have any moral right to seek to ratify the agreement in Parliament.
Alhaji Bature who is a sympathizer of opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) revealed that the hands of then President John Mahama was tied when the US decided to bring the Gitmo 2 in the country.
“President Mahama’s hands was tied and the NPP knew it but they played politics with it” he stated.
Alhaji Bature said the only way the government can be taken serious after this landmark ruling is by sending Gitmo 2 back to the USA.
