The government has affirmed its resolve to invest financial resources in the transportation system to make the country a transportation hub in West Africa.
The Minister of Transport, Mr Kwaku Ofori Asiamah, said it was thus the vision of the ministry to create an integrated, cost-effective, safe and sustainable transportation system.

Such a transportation system, he said, would be “responsive to the needs of society, supporting growth and poverty reduction and capable of establishing Ghana as a transportation hub within the West African sub-region.”
Mr Asiamah made the statement in Accra last Friday when he inaugurated an audit committee for the Ministry of Transport.
The five-member committee has Mr Daniel Boateng Ansong, a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants Ghana (ICAG), as chairman, with Mr Usuman Abdul Razak, Mrs Mercy Offei Koranteng, both from the Internal Audit Agency, and Hajia Halima Yakubu and Mrs Irene Messiba, both from the Ministry of Transport, as members.
The audit committee is to ensure the implementation of recommendations contained in internal audit reports on the ministry, follow up actions on Parliament’s decisions on the Auditor General’s reports and prepare annual reports on the implementation of the recommendations of Parliament.

Financial prudence
Mr Asiamah faulted past governments for failing to invest huge resources in the transportation system.
Besides, he said financial prudence and accountability were not complied with, a situation which resulted in the ministry being cited for various shades of financial indiscipline in reports of the Auditor General.
Mr Asiamah pledged that the Ministry of Transport, under his watch, would abide by financial regulations so that the audit committee would have little or no negative financial reports about the ministry.
He, however, challenged the audit committee to guide the ministry to comply with financial discipline and financial regulations guiding the government is expenditure.
That stance, he said, was in line with President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s promise to protect the public purse.
“I entreat you to do your work professionally without fear or favour so that we can together obtain value for money at all times for our country,” he charged the board.

Chairman’s response
Mr Ansong said the committee would ensure the adherence to financial discipline by the Ministry of Transport.
Besides, he said, the committee would advise on areas that could streamline the operations of the ministry.
