Two persons alleged to be behind the recruitment and training of young men to break into cars in the Osu area have been busted.
The suspects, Moses Appiah, 46, a businessman, and George Lamptey, 44, a welder, are said to have trained young men who are sent out every night to break into cars and steal their contents.
The stolen items are then received by Appiah, who parks a car at a point in Osu where the young men dispose of their booty.
They were arrested after some cars which were parked in front of a nightclub and a drinking spot in Osu were broken into.
Police relieved
Briefing the Daily Graphic, the Osu District Police Command Crime Officer, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Mr Richard Daplah, said the arrest of the suspects was a great relief to the police as the increasing incidents of car break-ins in the area had been a headache for the police.
He said the command had received numerous complaints of stolen laptops, mobile phones, bags and other valuables from parked cars belonging to revellers who patronised the services of restaurants, fast food joints and nightclubs in the area.
He said there had also been occasions when cars parked at churches in the area suffered the same fate.
Arrest
On May 20, 2017, ASP Mr Daplah said, the police received a complaint from a man who found his car broken into and its content looted after patronising a drinking spot with his friends.
Some of the items stolen from the car were a bag containing various items, documents and a wallet.
He said a police team on routine patrols at about 1 a.m. on the same day came across Appiah and Lamptey in a car, with a number of bags in it.
During initial interrogation, Mr Daplah said, the two suspects were found fumbling, for which reason they were arrested and taken to the Osu Police station.
Immediately, the victim who had reported the theft of his bag and other items from his car was called and he identified them among the numerous bags retrieved from the suspects.
So far, Mr Daplah said, two other victims, including a woman who reported that her car, which was parked at the St James Catholic Church at Osu, was broken into on March 25, 2017, had identified their items.
When the rooms of Appiah, who lived at Kasoa, and that of Lamptey, a resident of Larterbiokoshie, were searched, the police found more bags, laptops and other items suspected to have been stolen.
Mr Daplah appealed to victims of car break-ins in the Osu area to contact the Osu District Police Command to identify their items and also assist with police investigations.
