The Member of Parliament (MP) for Gomoa Central in the Central Region, Naana Eyiah, has urged the youth to respect the aged show kindness and honour to them.

That, she noted, would enable them to live long and enjoy the same gesture from others.

She said this when she organised a programme to honour about 120 mothers at Gomoa Benso.

The women were from Gomoa Akropong, Benso, Ekroful and Aboso.

They are members of the Gomoa Benso Old Age Foundation founded by the Queenmother of Gomoa Benso, who doubles as the Kontihemaa of Gomoa Adjumako Traditional Council, Nana Adjoa Aduokuah.

The foundation, which was established a year ago, has about 100 members who have been registered with the National Insurance Scheme (NHIS) by the Chief of Gomoa Benso, Nana Takyi Wiabo.

At the programme, Nana  Aduokuah said previously, young women dressed decently, were respectful, humble and ready to be trained by their mothers but these days most of them did not humble themselves to learn from the elderly, blaming it on the influx of foreign culture.

The District Chief Executive (DCE) of Gomoa East, Mr Benjamin Kojo Otoo, said there were places to register the aged who did not have National Insurance, adding that he had discussed with the two MPs in the area and other opinion leaders to assist the aged to register.

Mr Otoo said during this period in a person’s life, there was a need for enough attention from the family.

Touching on education, he said government policies such as the Free Senior High School and the one district, one factory would increase the literacy rate and improve the standard of living of the people.

The MP for Gomoa Central, who organised the programme, distributed 120 pieces of cloth to the women who attended the event. She said she honoured the women to enable them to feel proud of being mothers.

Apart from members of the foundation, widows were also invited to the programme. Naana Eyiah said she had an interaction with them to know their needs before the Mother’s Day and, therefore, decided on the pieces of cloth.
