Four members of car stealing syndicate arrested in Tarkwa

Four persons suspected to be members of a carstealing syndicate have been arrested by the police in Tarkwa. The suspects, identified as Godfrey Kwakye, 42, Samuel Nana Kwakye, 38, Mahmud Abdulai, alias Baba Kankani, 38, and Joseph Osei, 36, were arrested at Tarkwa while offering for sale a Toyota Corolla vehicle they had stolen from a car rental company in Accra.

They allegedly changed the number plate of the vehicle and pasted a “For Sale” sticker on it with their telephone numbers directing prospective buyers to call.

They were said to have also faked documents to cover the vehicle for immediate transfer of ownership to any prospective buyer.

Incident

Speaking to the Daily Graphic, the Western Regional Police Public Relations Officer, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Ms Olivia Ewuarabena Adiku, said the four suspects were currently in police custody.

She said the suspects hired the vehicle from a car rental company, Errands Car Rentals, in Accra with the view of using it for their business meetings within Accra but failed to return the vehicle at the end of the contract.

The suspects, she said, drove the vehicle, with the registration number GW 1824-16, to Tarkwa to sell but were arrested upon a tip-off.

Ms Adiku said the driver, Baba Kankani, was arrested in front of the Tarkwa branch of  Ecobank while the three other suspects were picked up at a hotel they were lodging.

According to the police officer, the car rental company had earlier reported the suspects to the police in Accra after their inability to retrieve the vehicle.

Fake documents

She said a search in the car led to the recovery of another number plate marked GG

5390-15, a vehicle transfer form C, and a roadworthy and insurance certificate.
