A group of policemen believed to be from the Mamprobi station yesterday morning clashed with the youth of Akoto Lante in Accra who jumped to the defence of undefeated boxer, Brimah Kamoko, aka Bukom Banku.

The incident followed an attempt by the Police to arrest Kamoko over his comments on an alleged hit-and-run accident involving a police officer and a professional boxer.

A former national welterweight champion, Isaac Aryee was allegedly knocked down while riding a motorbike by a vehicle driven by one officer Aikins of the Mamprobi Police post last Wednesday afternoon on the Mortuary Road in Accra.

According to eyewitnesses, the police officer drove away without attending to the injured boxer who was in a critical condition, only for the boxer to be saved by a good samaritan who rushed him to the Korlu-Bu Teaching Hospital.

The boxer, who is still on admission, suffered a broken neck but the Police were apparently not happy about comments made by Bukom Banku on radio, accusing the officer of the hit-and-run behaviour.

A group made up of seven officers, led by Commander Asare, and including the accused police officer, stormed Akoto Lante where Kamoko resides to arrest him but were fiercely resisted by the youth.

Sensing danger, six policemen allegedly jumped into their vehicle and drove away, leaving Commander Asare behind, who had to follow them in a taxi.

In a related development, the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA), led by its president, Peter Zwennes, paid a visit to Isaac Aryee in hospital and are now liaising with the Police to ensure justice.

“We just left Korle-Bu heading towards the police station. The Commander followed us to the scene and to the hospital and now we are going back to the police station,” the GBA Communications Director, Naa Darkuah Dodoo, confirmed.
