Some of the councilors being sworn-in
The Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly, Anthony K. K. Sam, has admonished members of the Sub-Metropolitan District Councils in the area to discharge their duties in a manner that would speed up the development of the Metropolis.
He also urged them to be conversant with all the Assembly bye laws to ensure their strict enforcement.
Mr Sam stated this during the inauguration of 79 sub metropolitan district council members in four sub-metropolitan areas in Sekondi-Takoradi.
They were made up of 20 councilors each from Takoradi, Effia-Kwesimintsim, and Essikado-Ketan Sub-Metropolitan District Council and 19 councilors from the Sekondi Sub-Metropolitan District Council.
The Council members swore the oath of secrecy, allegiance and oath of office.
K.K Sam charged the councilors not to abuse the position entrusted to them and urged them to collaborate with other stakeholders and development partners to undertake self-help projects in their respective electoral Areas. The MCE said, “It is my fervent hope that you will foster collaboration and when you pull your ideas, knowledge and energies together, your various sub- metropolitan district councils will reap the full benefits”.
He pointed out that the legislative instrument that established the councils mandated them to keep records of ratable property, to fix and collect rates and fees.
It also mandated them to promote and safeguard public health, be responsible for the management of waste and maintenance of markets among others.
He appealed to the newly sworn-in district councilors to team up with the assembly to identify unauthorized structures in various communities in order to curb the construction of houses on water-ways.
The Sekondi-Takoradi Mayor revealed that the metropolis would embark on a massive clean-up exercise on Saturday May 6, 2017.
“You will therefore be required to mobilize and whip up the enthusiasm of the members of your communities to effectively participate in the clean-up exercise”, he told the councilors.
Mr John Davis, the Presiding Member for the assembly pointed out that there was the need to strengthen the sub structures to accelerate the decentralization process.
