President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has again condemned attacks perpetrated by supporters of his party against those of the National Democratic Congress after the 2016 general elections.
The President said these attacks were unjustified, against the law and should not be allowed to continue.
Delivering his first State of the Nation Address as president, Mr Akufo-Addo said he found the attacks on supporters of the NDC unpardonable regardless of who perpetrated them.
“Wrongdoing has no political colour and I do not subscribe to the lawlessness of political party supporters simply because their party has been elected into office.”
Some supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in some parts of the country after the announcement of candidate Akufo-Addo as the winner of the 2016 general elections, went on rampage seizing public property.
They seized and vandalised public property, took over toll booths and attacked supporters of the NDC who were working in these offices during the transition period.
These supporters also stormed basic schools where caterers of the school feeding programme were beaten and food items meant to feed school children were thrown away.
President Akufo-Addo said when those incidents began, he instructed the then Inspector General of Police (IGP) John Kudalor to apply the law irrespective of the political affiliation of those breaking the law.
“This instruction was also carried on to his successor, David Asante Apeatu, both of them acted upon it which helped to bring the situation under control,” he said.
The President stressed that although the actions of his party supporters were as a result of the same treatment meted out to them by the NDC supporters when they won power in 2009, a repeat of it in 2017 is not justified.
“I condemn all such conducts and all call on all political parties especially NPP and NDC to ensure that this is the last time such undignified acts occur during our periods of transition,” President Akufo-Addo said.
