Some residents of Abura-Asebu-Kwamankese in the Central Region are appealing to government to help revamp citrus factory that would enable them process the citrus that they grow.
The residents have expressed worry over the closure of the citrus processing plant located at Asebu, saying most of the oranges they produce get rotten partly due to the lack of buyers and the absence of a processing plant to process their farm produce.
This situation they say, have compelled them to face seemingly insurmountable hardships since their lives are dependent on citrus farming.
There are about 10,000 farmers organized under a co-operative system of management with a total citrus farm size of 46,000 acres in the district and production of about 1,288,000 tons of citrus fruits annually.
Chief of Abura-Kranpa and the Ankobeahene of the Abura traditional area, Nana Kumi Djata II also added his voice to the voices of aggrieved residents saying that they have been deceived upon a promise made by the government that they would revamp the citrus factory at Asebu in order for the citrus farmers process what they grow.
“We were promised that the Asebu citrus factory they were going to revive it and buy our produce from us but they are rather using the citrus factory for the production of pure water”, the Chief lamented.
