Tampa Bay Rays lose again in MLB, Toronto Blue Jays flying high


Miami scored three unanswered runs in the fourth inning as the Marlins claimed a four-game sweep of the Rays at Tropicana Field in Florida.

While the victory extended Miami’s winning streak to four games to consolidate their spot in the top two of the National League East division, it condemned the Rays to their 10th consecutive defeat.

The Rays have not won since May 25, when they defeated the Boston Red Sox 8-5 to complete a three-game sweep, and remain rooted to the bottom of the American League East standings.

Tampa Bay’s record losing streak stands at 15, which was set back in 2002 when they were known as the Tampa Bay Devil Rays up until 2008.

The high-flying Toronto Blue Jays moved over five games clear in the AL East.

The Blue Jays got the better of the Detroit Tigers, triumphing 7-5 for their fifth win on the bounce.

Toronto, who boast a win-loss record of 37-24, are 5.5 games clear of the Baltimore Orioles, who lost 8-6 to the Texas Rangers.

As for the New York Yankees, they remain third despite edging the Oakland Athletics 2-1.

In other results on Thursday, Michael Morse had a two-run homer as the NL West-leading San Francisco Giants disposed of the Cincinnati Reds 6-1.

The Arizona Diamondbacks swept the Colorado Rockies thanks to a 12-7 win on the road at Coors Field.

Starting pitcher Doug Fister allowed two runs in seven innings to inspire the Nationals to a 4-2 victory against the Philadelphia Phillies – Washington’s third win in succession.

The Chicago Cubs were also triumphant, beating the New York Mets 7-4 for a three-game sweep.

The Houston Astros, who selected Brady Aiken with the number one pick, capped a memorable day with an 8-5 win at the expense of the Los Angeles Angels.

Elsewhere, the Kansas City Royals rallied from two runs down to edge the St Louis Cardinals 3-2, while the Milwaukee Brewers got the better of the Minnesota Twins 8-5.
