Accra, July 30, GNA – Mr Justice Joe Appiah, Member of Parliament for Ablekuma North Constituency, said government appointees must sacrifice their salaries for three months and invest the proceeds into the mass cocoa spraying exercise.
He said the move would help Ghana to move away from the current decline in production levels of less than 800,000 metric tonnes annually to a higher yield.
Mr Appiah said this in an interview with the Ghana News Agency in Accra on the current cocoa production level and its impact on Ghana’s economy.
He said it was ironical that Ghana, which was once the leading cocoa producer in the world, had allowed Cote d’Ivoire to overtake her producing about 1.5 million metric tonnes annually.
He said since cocoa was the backbone of Ghana’s economy, it was important for Government to make a lot of sacrifices in order to revamp the industry and increase production to help arrest the ailing economy.
Mr Appiah said the Government should fix the economic challenges Ghana was going through and lay the bare facts to the citizenry to enable them to have sympathy and help minimize the current agitations and strikes.
He admitted that no developing country like Ghana could survive without seeking external support at one time or the other, but said instead of always running outside to borrow, the Government should be creative and generate revenue internally.
