National Service Scheme fails to account for Gh¢ 83,000 unclaimed allowances

The Auditor General has indicted the National Service Scheme for failing to account for GH¢ 83,137 in unclaimed allowances due service personnel.

The unclaimed allowances which cover the period between 2002 to 2005 were not returned to the Consolidated Fund.

The Auditor General then directed the NSS to seek retrospective authorization from the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning for the use of unclaimed allowances or otherwise take steps to recover and pay all such monies back to government chest.

In its 2014 update report however, the auditor general found that the service is yet to fully comply with the recommendation.

In its performance audit report on the administration of the Scheme, the Auditor General revealed that the current management of the scheme could not trace records of the unclaimed allowances.
