Matt Garza pitched more than six scoreless innings for the Brewers, who blanked the Twins until the eighth inning.
Garza struck out eight Twins batters, and despite the Minnesota franchise earning 12 hits to the Brewers’ nine, Jonathan Lucroy and Mark Reynolds both batted in two runs to lead Milwaukee to victory.
In further good news for Milwaukee, their closest rivals the St Louis Cardinals were thrashed 6-0 by the Kansas City Royals.
Pitcher Danny Duffy allowed just one hit in six innings in a stellar performance for the Royals, and they went on to score three times in each of the seventh and eighth innings to canter to victory.

The Marlins sit 2.5 games behind the Braves, while the Mets are a game further behind after their third straight success – which came in the form of an 11-2 thrashing of divisional rivals the Philadelphia Phillies.
The Mets were leading 1-0 at the top of the sixth, before a Wilmer Flores grand slam and a sixth-run ninth inning blew the Phillies away.
The Toronto Blue Jays had a rest day, but had their lead atop the American League’s East division extended to four games via losses to rivals.
The New York Yankees were thrashed 10-2 by the Seattle Mariners to fall further behind the Canadian outfit, while the Boston Red Sox are 6.5 games behind the leaders after a 3-2 loss to the Cleveland Indians.
Similarly, the Detroit Tigers are five games clear in the AL Central division, after the Chicago White Sox fell to a 5-2 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The Dodgers’ win saw them move within seven games of runaway NL West leaders the San Francisco Giants.
The Pittsburgh Pirates were 10-3 winners over the San Diego Padres.
