Member of the National Democratic Congress(NDC) Abraham Amaliba has stated, the 2012 Presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) will never see anything good with the government led by John Mahama.
The member of NDC’s legal team said “even if the NDC government lines up people on the streets of Ghana and gives each one a gold bar, Nana Akuffo Addo will still say that the NDC is not performing”.
He was speaking on Multi TV and Joy FM’s political analysis program, Newsfile, last Saturday.
Abraham Amaliba was responding to a statement from Nana Akufo Addo pleading with intra-party groups aligned to flagbearer aspirants to desist from attacking each other because it would give the ruling NDC, the opportunity to divert national attention from its abysmal performance.
The statement said party faithfuls should not “give our opponents comfort from their non-performance” even as the campaign to elect a flagbearer for the party heats up.
The party will choose a flagbearer in December 2014.
There are fears within the NPP that the race for flagbearship, mainly between Nana Akuffo Addo and Alan Kyeremanten, could get acrimonious once again as the party’s youth have began trading vituperative attacks at each other.
It is believed a similar battle in 2007 and 2011 only served to further their rival’s interest who picked up character-assassinating stories from a bitter campaign and used it against Nana Akuffo Addo during the Presidential elections.
But picking up on Nana Addo’s jab against his government, Abraham Amaliba said he doesn’t expect the two-time flagbearer of the NPP “to embrace and praise the government”
He also accused Chairman of the NPP Paul Afoko of turning up the political temperature in the country after he declared, defeat in 2016 presidential elections is not an option.
“I cringe, because elections should not be a do-and-die affair”, Amaliba said.
He called on civil society to clamp down on his statement and called on Paul Afoko to sit Nana Addo and Alan Kyerematen down and get them to appeal to their supporters in a televised program.
