St Roses Senior High School, A prestigious Catholic girls school in Akwatia in the Eastern Region of Ghana has launched its 50th Anniversary Celebrations in Accra. The theme for the celebration is “Rose’s at 50, the impact of Catholic Education for girls; the way forward”
St. Rose’s is ranked among the Grade A schools in Ghana with an excellent academic record and has produced remarkable West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), ‘O and A level’ results over the years. Products from the school can be found in different career fields from Actuarial science, law, education, medicine, technology, Religious etc.
“In the 2013 WASSCE, out of a total of 656 candidates presented 536 students had 8 passes, 114 had 7 passes and 4 had 6 passes. Out of the 19 subjects the students scored 100% in 16 areas and with the other 3 subjects the least percentage was 97.9%,” said Mrs Margaret Banfu, the headmistress of the school
In her acknowledgement, Mrs. Margaret Banfu thanked all the major stakeholders for their relentless support to the school over the years – the late Bishop Oliver Bowers, the Dominican Sisters from Speyer, Germany notably Sisters Beatrice and Solamen (both former Headmistresses) the Catholic Church especially Father P. Lo Bianco and all the successive Bishops of the Accra and Koforidua Dioceses, the Chiefs, particularly Barima Kofi Bempong II and his successors, elders and people of Akwatia, the various governments, the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service, past Headmistresses, the Parent Teacher Association (PTA), Rose’s Old Students Association (ROSA), Past and Present Teaching and Non-Teaching staff, Students and all well-wishers.
Ms. Grace Brew, president of the ROSA expressed old girls pride that St. Rose’s continues to be ranked among the Grade A schools in Ghana and is widely respected. “Interestingly, by the nature of our upbringing, Rosecans are so unassuming and yet occupy key positions in and outside the Country. We do not attest to ‘noise making’ as other Schools do, but we still produce excellent results in our various fields of endeavour.” She remarked. Ms. Brew called on old girls to endeavour to give back to the school and to take a keen interest in mentoring current students.
In her keynote address, Ms. Abena Amoah an Investment Banker shared her experiences on the benefits of Catholic Education and its impact on girls.
Present at the launch were Catholic Bishop Monsignor Benson, Representatives from the Akwatia Traditional Council, Students and teachers, The PTA, The Catholic Education Unit and various year groups of the Rose’s Old Students Association (ROSA).
Several activities have been planned for the Anniversary including a fundraising ball. Funds to be raised from the Golden Jubilee events would go towards the building of a secure fence wall for the school valued at One hundred and forty-one thousand, eight hundred and nine Ghana Cedis and four pesewas ( GH¢141,809.04).
About St Roses
St. Rose’s Senior High School (Formerly St. Roses Secondary School) was founded in 1965 by the Dominican Sisters from Speyer, Germany. It currently has a student population of 1,014 who are all boarding students.
The School offers three Elective Programmes apart from the four Core subjects, The Elective programmes are Science -480 Students, General Arts- 431 Students and Vocational (Home Economics) 103 Students. Physical Education and Religious and Moral Education, are compulsory for every student.
