The fourth episode of the MTN Heroes of Change television series airs this weekend with stories about Abena Antwi and Ken Addae.

Hosted by Kwami Sefa Kayi, The MTN Heroes of Change is a 13-part television programme that started airing on five stations from Sunday, January 26.

There are people committed to helping their communities in a variety of ways and the proramme, an initiative of the MTN Ghana Foundation, aims to highlight the work of such people and eventually support them financially to execute their projects.

Abena Antwi, a full time philanthropist from Accra has dedicated herself to being a mother figure to inmates and released prisoners who would otherwise have had no one to care for them.

She provides counseling and mentorship mainly to female and young inmates while they are in prison and provides them with all that they need to be able to successfully reintegrate into society once they are released.

“As a person whose educational background is in policy making and planning, I realised that a nation that does not invest in adequately preparing inmates to reintegrate into society will only be recycling criminals. Also I am pleased to know that my efforts go a long way to improving people’s lives.

“My major achievement is that after about seven years I am still here even though many people from the very onset said this was going nowhere. Also my foundation, the Angel Zoe foundation, has succeeded in refurbishing an IT Centre at the Senior Correction Centre,” she said

Ken Kwaku Addae, another full time philanthropist from Tamale has dedicated himself to being an advocate for people who are accused of witchcraft.

He engages them in activities such as craft training and seminars to help make them feel loved and appreciated. He also educates the larger public about the fact that accusing people of witchcraft is primitive and unacceptable in modern society.

“My mother was accused of witchcraft and stigmatised when I was a child so I decided to champion the cause of people accused of witchcraft in order to prevent them from being victimised.

According to him, funding and lack of volunteers to support this project present major challenges in his line of work.

“It is also difficult getting the traditional authorities to participate and support advocacy work because of the superstitious believes held by these authorities. The youth, who play an active role in banishing people accused of witchcraft, do not grant me audience when I try to engage them.

The two personalities are among 20 people selected from across the country to be featured on the MTN Heroes of Change programme which is looking at selfless efforts in five categories: community crusader, social protection, health, environment and education.

A panel of four judges will select winners for each category, as well as an overall winner. An amount of GH¢10,000 will go to support each category winner and the ultimate winner will receive project support of up to GH¢50,000.

The MTN Heroes of Change is shown on Sundays on Crystal TV (7.30 pm); Metro TV (8.00 pm); Multi TV (8.00 pm); eTV Ghana (8.00 pm) and TV Africa (8.30 pm).
