The Accra Regional Police Command has arrested four personnel of the National SWAT Unit of the Ghana Police Service for allegedly extorting money from two women.
They are Sergeant Daniel Asiedu, 44; Sergeant Adam Ibrahim, 38; Constable Bright K. Owusu, 23; and Constable Juliet Esi Akombo, 22.
According to the Director General of Police Public Affairs, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Rev. David Nenyi Ampah-Bennin, the women reported that around 8.30pm last Saturday they parked their car around Legon for one of them to urinate.
He said the women alleged that the four police officers arrested them, stripped them naked and bundled them into a police vehicle.
DCOP Rev. Ampah-Bennin stated that preliminary investigations revealed that instead of taking the women to the nearest police station, they rather extorted GHc170 and released them.
A reliable police source said the two women were alleged to have been caught naked in the car in an act of lesbianism.
Instead of processing the women for court, the officers rather saw an opportunity to make quick money. The four went on to take nude pictures of them and threatened to place the pictures on the internet if they failed to pay GHc3,000.
The women claimed they were detained for three hours before they were released with their car.
The women proceeded to the Kaneshie Police Station to lodge the complaint. The matter was then referred to the Police Intelligence and Professional Standards (PIPS) Bureau, leading to the arrest of the officers.
