Pretoria – Police have arrested Somali pirate kidnap survivor Debbie Calitz after she was found in possession of thousands of rands worth of narcotics.

Her flat in Pretoria was raided on Friday after police received a tip-off that Calitz was growing dagga and hallucinogenic “magic mushrooms”, The Times reported.

Calitz lives in the Pretoria flat with her daughter and son.

‘Arrogant’

A police official said Calitz was “arrogant” at the time of the raid and tried to use her celebrity status to stop her from being arrested.

”She was throwing her name out like it would mean something to us. She was carrying on as though we would turn around and walk out,” he said.

She apparently kept on saying she wasn’t hurting anyone or breaking the law.

Calitz was arrested along with another woman and five men.

Hostage ordeal

The arrest came six months after Calitz and former partner Bruno Pelizzari were rescued from Somali pirates.

Pelizzari on Sunday said he was shocked by the news of Calitz’s arrest and felt sorry for her.

“As far as I know, she did not use drugs. Poor Debbie. I really just feel sorry for her. After all that she has been through and now this to happen to her,” he said.

Sapa reported that she and the others are expected to appear in the Hatfield Community Court on Monday on charges of possession of drugs.

Calitz recently released a book about her kidnap ordeal, titled Debbie Calitz: 20 Months in Hostage Hell.
