Tanzania: Isles Hails Price Control Initiative

Zanzibar — AS Zanzibar government boasts of good food reserve, authorities in the Ministry of Trade, Industries, and Marketing say the present system of monitoring wholesale and retail prices of essential commodities has enhanced control of prices.

“Currently we have enough food in the Islands, and the present system of monitoring wholesale and retail prices of the essential commodities has been helpful in controlling prices,” said the Minister for Trade Mr Nassor Ahmed Mazrui in a meeting with President Ali Mohamed Shein.

The audience was one of Dr Shein’s frequent consultative meetings with representatives from different government ministries to evaluate performance and implementation of the government policies and development programmes.

“We are following-up closely food prices in the world market for better preparation in case of heightened global food crisis,” Mazrui said at the meeting held at the Zanzibar State House. In attendance were also the First Vice President, Mr Seif Sharif Hamad, the Second Vice President, Ambassador Seif Ali Idd, and the Revolutionary Council Secretary, Dr Abdulhamid Yahaya Mzee.

He asked members of the Business community to help customers particularly the poor by being honest and avoiding unnecessary price increase of rice, sugar, and wheat flour, the main food for the people of Zanzibar.
