Durban – A man has drowned near Richards Bay in KwaZulu-Natal on Saturday, the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) said.
“At 18:20, NSRI Richards Bay volunteer sea rescue duty crew were activated following reports of a drowning in progress at the Bay Hall area, a community swimming area inside of the Richards Bay Port,” spokesperson Craig Lambinon said.
The NSRI, police and a local ambulance service responded and upon arrival found a woman, 20, ashore.
The woman had reportedly been rescued by a bystander.
A man, around 40-years-old, remained missing.
“It appears that the two had been swimming together towards Pelican Island when they got into difficulty in the water. It is not known what may have caused them to get into difficulties,” said Lambinon. “Paramedics resuscitated the woman on-scene and she has been transported to hospital by ambulance in a critical condition.”
A search was undertaken to find the missing man and after no sign of him was found, the police diving unit was activated.
The diving unit found the man’s body, which was handed over to forensics.
Police opened an inquest docket.
