The National Chairman of the Community Watch Forum (CWFL), Mr. Isaac Nyenati Kaffey has commended the citizens of Quardu Gboni District in Lofa County for constructing a police depot in the area.
He said that the construction of a police depot in the district will help to reduce the over crowdedness of inmates in the county.
Chairman Kaffey made the commendation in an interview with this paper recently when he returned from the leeward counties where he toured Nimba, Bong and Lofa Counties.
He said that effort of the citizens is intended to buttress government’s national reconstruction agenda for the betterment of the citizens in that community.
He is therefore urging other citizens if counties to emulate the good examples of Quardu Gboni people so as to reduce the congestion of prison compounds in the country.
Chairman Kaffey said that he was taken aback that some districts in the counties are operating without Liberia National Police and other state security personnel due to the shortage of manpower. He then called on the government to assign police to those districts that do not have for safety of the citizens.
He said that currently his organization is operating where police cannot reach for shortage of manpower so as to protect life and property through neighborhood watch teams.
He explained that at present, there is a cordial relationship between the police and the forum as well as other state security.
He also mentioned that the protection of life and property of the citizens should not be the responsibility of the government alone, but it should claim the attention of every Liberian.
He said it is regrettable to note that many Liberians have been placed behind bars for more than 9-10 months without trial, which he said violates the rights of the citizens.
According to Mr. Kaffey, there is a dire need for government to enforce the pre-trial law so that the interest of the citizens will be fully protected.
He observed that all of the detainees in the leeward counties have been placed in one cell, which he described as bad and needs to be stopped immediately.
Mr. Kaffey wants the government to put stop to the citizens of Bong, Lofa and Nimba Counties who are involved in illegal planting and trading of marijuana so that the children will not get involved.
