Johannesburg – All South African Airways flights between South Africa and the eastern parts of the United States have resumed, the airline said on Wednesday.

“Approval was obtained from the airport authorities in New York to recommence flight operations to JFK (John F Kennedy) airport,” SAA spokesperson Tlali Tlali said in a statement.

SAA flights coming to and from the eastern United States were grounded on Sunday because of the effects of Hurricane Sandy.

“Onward connecting flights beyond JFK are still not fully restored to normal operations,” Tlali said.

“In addition, passengers are advised that ground transportation and underground rail systems in New York are not yet restored to full operation.”

Flights between Johannesburg and Washington DC had also resumed.

Tlali advised passengers to get updated information with regard to ground transportation and connecting flights in the US before checking in.

“SAA deeply regrets the inconvenience to passengers caused by the cancellation of its flights to the US this week as a result of Hurricane Sandy,” he said.

“We are pleased that flight operations to the US are returning to normal and we will do everything we can in order to accommodate those who were unable to fly due to the extreme weather conditions.”

More than 100 people have died since the huge storm hit North America.

At least 69 people were killed in the Caribbean and around 49 in the US and Canada. – Sapa
