Johannesburg – The government will help a Soweto family bury an 11-year-old girl shot dead during a police chase, the community safety department said on Wednesday.

“The assistance will not end with the funeral arrangements, but with any other possible arrangements, including the regular updates on the investigations,” Community Safety MEC Faith Mazibuko said.

The girl was hit by a bullet while police were chasing a man in Braamfischerville last Monday.

He had threatened to kill his girlfriend and her mother, and damaged the windows of his girlfriend’s home.

Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said the woman pointed out the man’s home to the police.

“As the police approached the premises, [the] suspect released a dog and jumped over a wall.”

A chase ensued. A police officer fired two shots when the man drew his firearm.

The child, playing nearby, was hit and died at the scene. The man got away.

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate was looking into the matter.
