ZUMA filmfest lights up Abuja

ZUMA Film Festival 2012, with the theme “The Human Story: Connecting People” kicks off this Sunday May 6, 2012, in Abuja.

Expected at the opening ceremony which commences 5.00pm, at  Silverbird Cinema, are a cross section of Nigerian and foreign movie stars, producers, actors, marketers, exhibitors, film enthusiasts, representative of relevant government and private agencies. Others include representatives of foreign missions in Nigeria and members of the public.

The nation’s Information Minister, Mr. Labaran Maku is expected to declare open the four day biennial film fiesta, which ends on Wednesday May 9th, 2012, at the banquet hall of the Nicon Luxury Hotel, Abuja.

In a release, the Nigerian Film Corporation (NFC) and organisers of the festival said part of activities of the opening ceremony will be the presentation of the ZUMA film Festival Life Time Achievement Award to Oba Sanya Dosunmu, prominent Nigerian Television/Film director, and famous for the now rested Tv soap “The Village Headmaster”; Jonathan Haynes and Mane Manrique, both with strong and sustained ties to the Nigerian motion picture industry in the areas of capacity building, scholarly work, promotion and development .

The NFC Annual Film Lecture 2012, with the topic: “The Film maker as a Social Realist and Cultural Advocate”, will also take place during the festival. Critical issues on the social responsibility role of the filmmaker in shaping the society, the statement added, will be addressed at the film lecture to be presented by Professor Ahmed Yerima, former Director-General of the National Troupe/ National Theatre, and presently at The Redeemed University, Ogun State.

The presentation of cash prizes/ certificate of participation to winners of the 2011/2012 NFC Annual Film Essay competition shall also take place during the film festival.
