Durban – A prominent minibus taxi operator has been killed and two other men have been wounded in a drive-by shooting at the Nquthu taxi rank, the KwaZulu-Natal transport department said on Wednesday.

“Jeqe Dlame, who was a member of the Nquthu Pioneer Taxi Association, was killed on Tuesday,” spokesperson Kwanele Ncalane said.

Dlame was sitting in his car and the other two men were standing next to it dividing up stokvel money when they were shot.

“Unknown suspects opened fire as they drove by the Nquthu taxi rank. Dlame died on the scene,” said Ncalane.

“We condemn incidents of this nature as they possess the potential of destabilising the taxi industry and the broader community,” MEC Willies Mchunu said.

He said it was not yet known if Dlame’s killing was related to a taxi dispute.
